If you’ve completed our ‘Te Whakapakari’ Course you’ll know that you can add a purpose to a sentence using ‘ki te’ or ‘kia … ai’. Do you know when to choose ‘ki te’ and when to choose ‘kia … ai’.
As a starting point, you’ll usually use ‘ki te’ when the same person is doing both the first and the second action. But you’ll use ‘kia … ai’ to mean ‘so that’ or ‘in order to’ when there are two different subjects. At times you may also use ‘kia … ai’ with one subject if you want the second action to sound like an intention without really saying whether it was accomplished or not.
There are other uses of ‘kia … ai’ when it comes to adding a purpose but we’ll stick to intentions and different subjects for this activity.
