TE WHAKAPAKARI – STRENGTHENING YOUR TE REO MĀORI

Welcome to ‘Te Whakapakari’! This is our level 2 course is designed to help you start strengthening your te reo Māori.  If you’ve completed our first course Te Tīmatanga or already have a basic foundation in te reo Māori this course will help you to expand your knowledge and build on that foundation.

This course focuses primarily on the common patterns found in te reo Māori in all the different times, past, present and future and learning the difference between expressing a completed action and action in progress.  By the conclusion of the 12 weeks you should be well equipped to speak about things happening in the past, present and future as well have a basic understanding of those trickly little words ‘i’ and ‘ki’.  We are also introduced to possessive words (my, your, their etc) and the a and o categories and how they work for example why is it ‘tā māua mahi’ (our work) but ‘tō māua waka’ (our car) and what’s the difference between ‘tō māua waka’, tō tāua waka or tō tātou waka as they all mean ‘our car.?

What you learn in this class should be just a part of your learning journey, local kaiako, whānau, iwi and community, as well as resources such as Te Paipera Tapu, te reo Māori books and television programmes can all help strengthen your reo.

Ko tōku ingoa ko Marie-Claire. My name is Marie-Claire and I’ve been teaching languages for around 25 years.  I have created this course to make learning te reo Māori fun and practical. Each lesson is designed to help you feel more confident to speak the beautiful language of te reo Māori.

The lessons are interactive, encourage lots of practice with lots of supporting resources.   Each course builds on the next so you start with the basics and gradually add more and more knowledge until before you know it, you’re having full on conversations in te reo Māori.  Have fun exploring the language and discovering how enjoyable learning can be!

What You’ll Learn in ‘Te Whakapakari & What’s Included in the Course

• Learn the two main ways to talk about action happening ‘now’ or ‘at the moment’.

• Learn why ‘e … ana’ works for the past, present and future but ‘kei te’ doesn’t.

• Learn how to express completed and ongoing action in the past.

• Talk about things happening in the future.

• Learn the negative sentence patterns for the past, present and future.

• Begin to understand the ‘a’ and ‘o’ categories for when you have something along with the neutral category but why that will only get you so far.

• Plus other little bits and pieces along the way to strengthen your te reo Māori

 

What will you need?   A stable internet connection – this is an online course so the lessons and supporting games, crosswords, flashcards etc are all accessed online.  You can download the lesson overview sheets so a printer may also be useful. 

You can choose to do these classes by yourself, or from time to time there will be small zoom group classes available – at this stage we have a  homeschoolers day class and two evening classes open to adults or children at 6:15 and 7:30pm  (if you would like to know when the next available zoom class is starting – email us at thelanguagetutors@gmail.com) – you would need an internet connection for those classes as well.

Also, along with setting aside time to complete the weekly lesson,  you’ll get the best out of the class if you are committed to practice te reo Māori each day.  A study buddy is great for this as are the games and puzzles included in your course.  Even 5 minutes a day will make a world of difference to your progress and how much you retain from your lessons and we really encourage you to add this to your learning plan!
