TE WHAKAHUA – PRONUNCIATION

Welcome to ‘Te Whakahua’ – ‘Pronunciation’! This self-paced lesson pack focuses on laying a good foundation for learning te reo Māori.  By the end of the class you should have all you need to confidently pronounce te reo Māori words and place names.  The main lesson is a Powerpoint presentation, designed for you to interact and start speaking straight away.  We will learn how important mouth shape is and there are little audio clips to help you make sure that you’re getting the right pronunciation.  Also included in this lesson pack are drag and drop, match the cards, a final quiz and other fun activities to help consolidate all that you’ll learn.  This lesson and all the games and activities can also be purchased as part of  our full 10 lesson course pack ‘Te Tīmatanga‘.

What you learn here should just a part of your learning journey.  In this lesson you’ll be introduced to the sounds of the Māori vowels and consonants as well as combinations that a lot of speakers find a little tricky such as ‘au’ and ‘ou’.  And your learning will be supported through listening, practice and games so that you can be confident to read and pronounce te reo Māori.  But along with this course, to develop deeper understanding, improve your pronunciation and your cultural knowledge—such as tikanga, dialectal differences, and local customs—we encourage learners to also engage with native speakers, iwi, and community-led resources.

Ko tōku ingoa ko Marie-Claire. My name is Marie-Claire and I’ve been teaching languages for around 25 years.  I have created this course to make learning te reo Māori fun and practical. Each lesson includes illustrations as most of us enjoy visual learning, the lessons are also interactive,  designed to help you quickly gain confidence to speak the beautiful language of te reo Māori.
