TE TĪMATANGA – THE BEGINNING

Welcome to ‘Te Tīmatanga’ – ‘The Beginning’! This beginner’s course is designed to help you start speaking, understanding, and enjoying Te Reo Māori from day one. You’ll learn how to greet people, introduce yourself, ask simple questions, and use everyday phrases.

What you learn here should just a part of your learning journey. You’ll be introduced to basic phrases, greetings, and everyday conversation and be supported through listening, practice and games to become comfortable interacting with others in te reo Māori.  Along with this course, to develop deeper understanding, improve your pronunciation and your cultural knowledge—such as tikanga, dialectal differences, and local customs—we encourage learners to also engage with native speakers, iwi, and community-led resources.

Ko tōku ingoa ko Marie-Claire. My name is Marie-Claire and I’ve been teaching languages for around 25 years.  I have created this course to make learning te reo Māori fun and practical. Each lesson is short, interactive, and is designed to help you feel more confident to speak the beautiful language of te reo Māori. Have fun exploring the language and discovering how enjoyable learning can be!
